Real-Time Field Coordination Keeps Restaurant Upfit On Schedule

NR Steel provided real-time field coordination support during the erection phase of a restaurant upfit in Huntersville, NC. The project involved converting an existing commercial structure into two adjacent restaurant spaces. During erection, the crew discovered that existing steel joists were not located as shown in the original as-built drawings. The owner's requirement that the existing deck remain in place also added a significant constraint: all new structural elements including beams, joists, and RTU support steel had to be installed from below without removing the deck above.
With erection stalled pending a resolution, the fabricator's erection team contacted us directly from the field via video call. We reviewed conditions with them in real time, assessed routing options for the new steel around the existing joist layout, and confirmed each proposed solution against the model before any field modifications were made. The coordination between the two adjacent tenant spaces, where structural changes on one side had direct implications for the other, was worked through during the same call.
The field coordination resolved the conflict without a formal RFI cycle, revised drawing submissions, or additional approval delays. Erection continued the same day. For fabricators working in occupied or partially constructed buildings where existing conditions routinely diverge from original drawings, direct access to the detailer during erection is a practical way to keep a job moving when the field does not match the plans.
